Carbon fiber composite ballast tank for deep sea 2024-08-01

The traditional deep-sea ballast tank is mainly made of wrought steel, aluminum, titanium and other metal materials, and the technology is relatively mature.

The weight of the ballast tank made of lightweight composite materials such as carbon fiber and polymer resin is 40% to 60% less than that of the metal tank of the same specification, which means that more scientific instruments can be carried in the deep sea exploration.

Due to the excellent performance of high pressure and high temperature resistance, lightweight polymer composites have been widely used in navigation, aviation and aerospace fields.

After nearly 3 years of hard work, the deep-sea ballast development team has successfully solved the multi-way problem of carbon fiber winding deep-sea high-pressure tank body, and has complete independent intellectual property rights. The lightweight composite deep-sea ballast tank made with this technology can be used as a general pressure vessel and is widely used in various ocean observation platforms such as ROV (remotely operated submersible), AUV (autonomous underwater submersible), submersible marker, and underwater glider.

At present, the series of ballast tanks produced by this technology have the ability to withstand the whole sea deep pressure. On this basis, the project team will make further efforts to develop a ballast tank with greater depth. The team's next goal is to move toward deep ocean plains, basins and trenches, steadily moving toward a "transparent ocean."
